On my way back from Cambridge every week I go through Kings Cross. The British Library is open until 8pm some nights, so I thought it was a good opportunity to drop in and have a look around. I had visions of doing the crossword or reading a paper in a grand reading room, but that wasn’t to be – not without a pass apparently! Besides that, it’s twenty years since the British Library moved from the British Museum where it had that famous circular reading room. Instead I had to settle for a tour of the library’s highlights collection, which are all kept in an exhibition space on the first floor. It’s got loads of really interesting things, from the Codex Sinaiticus to Mozart’s musical sketches to Beatles lyrics. Another free thing to do in London!
